OUR HISTORY

OUR HISTORY

This Corps was formed 1 September 1959 and designated Camp Petawawa Cadet Corps, and originally affiliated with the Camp Petawawa High School (later named General Panet High School).

On 15 May 1964, the Corps was redesignated 2642 - The Canadian Guards Cadet Corps, sharing it’s affiliated with 2nd Battalion, The Canadian Guards. Due to reorganization with the Canadian Army, 2nd Battalion, The Canadian Guards was reduced to nil strength and the cadet corps seemed a new affiliated unit. On 6 Oct 1970 the Corps became affiliated with and sponsored by CFB Petawawa, and thus was named 2642 - Canadian Forces Base Petawawa Cadet Corps. Effective 21 August 1979, sponsorship was changed to Branch 517, Royal Canadian Legion, Petawawa. That same year, on September 7th, the cadet corps’ affiliation changed to The Canadian Airborne Regiment. A letter (1085-11-4 SSO Cdts) dated 21 Aug 1980 stated due to lack of cadets and no 1980 annual inspection, 2642 was to be placed on probation until 1981 annual inspection. Effective 28 Jan 1981 change of designation to Airborne Cadet Corps. Letter 1085-11-4 (DCOS Ops) dated 22 Apr 1981 removed Corps from probation. The cadet corps continued to thrive through the 1980’s and 90’s. On disbandment of the Canadian Airborne Regiment in 1995, 3 Commando Group of the Airborne Holding Unit took over affiliation of the Corps. Effective 26 March 1996, 3rd Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment agreed to take on the role as the affiliated unit of 2642. Director Cadets Administration Order 216 (D Cdts Adm 216) authorized the change of affiliation. The cadets continue to be one of the few cadet corps in Canada to wear the maroon beret; a sign of their affiliation with Para Company.
